Health Canada has recalled nearly 46,000 window air conditioners due to a mould-related health risk. The units, which were sold between March 2020 and May 2025, may contain pooled water that fails to drain properly, creating an environment where mould can grow.
According to Health Canada, exposure to mould from these air conditioners may lead to respiratory problems and other health issues, particularly for individuals with pre-existing conditions or weakened immune systems.
What Triggered the Recall?
The affected air conditioners have a design flaw that prevents proper drainage of pooled water, resulting in mould growth within the units. On June 5, 2025, Health Canada officially issued the recall, categorizing the issue as a “microbial hazard.”
Manufacturer GD Midea Air-Conditioning Equipment Co., Ltd. confirmed that as of June 3, it had received five reports of mould in air conditioners sold in Canada. Fortunately, no health incidents have been reported in the country so far.
U.S. Recall Highlights Severity
The same product has caused more concern across the border. In the United States, the manufacturer is recalling 1.7 million units after receiving 152 reports of mould, including 17 cases where consumers experienced symptoms such as:
- Respiratory infections
- Allergic reactions
- Coughing and sneezing
- Sore throats due to mould exposure
This contrast highlights the potential seriousness of the issue and reinforces the importance of prompt action for Canadian consumers.
Which Brands Are Affected?
The recalled air conditioners were sold under multiple brand names, making it important for consumers to double-check their units. Affected brands include:
- Midea
- Comfort Aire
- Danby
- Frigidaire
- Insignia
- Keystone
- LBG Products
- Mr. Cool
- Perfect Aire
- Sea Breeze
If you purchased a window air conditioner from any of these brands between March 2020 and May 2025, your unit could be part of the recall.
How to Check If Your Unit Is Recalled
To confirm if your unit is included, visit Midea’s recall website and enter your model name and serial number, which are typically located on a label on the front right side of the unit when facing it.
Once your unit is verified, you’ll be presented with the option for either repair or refund.
What Are Your Options?
If your unit is affected by the recall, you can:
- Request a Free Repair
- A technician will install a new drain plug, or
- You will receive a repair kit with a new plug and bubble level, depending on the unit model.
- Apply for a Refund
- You can request a full or prorated refund based on the purchase date or manufacturing date.
- For the refund, you must:
- Return the unit using a prepaid shipping label, or
- Submit a photograph showing that the unplugged power cord has been cut.
Why Mould Exposure Is Dangerous
Mould can produce allergens and irritants that may cause health problems when inhaled. Risks include:
- Respiratory infections
- Asthma flare-ups
- Sinus congestion
- Persistent coughing
Vulnerable groups such as young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems face the highest risks. This is why Health Canada urges consumers to act quickly.
How to Report Health or Safety Incidents
If you’ve experienced any health issues or safety concerns related to these air conditioners, Health Canada requests you file a report. Doing so helps the agency track the impact of defective products and improve future safety measures.
